Governor Tony Evers is once again advocating for the legalization and taxation of recreational marijuana in Wisconsin, proposing a plan that could generate an estimated $58.1 million in tax revenue by the 2026-27 fiscal year. The proposal, included in his biennial budget, aims to regulate cannabis sales through state-licensed retailers, mirroring the state’s approach to alcohol distribution.
Beyond revenue generation, the plan includes criminal justice reforms, allowing individuals convicted of nonviolent marijuana-related offenses to seek reduced sentences or expungements. Supporters argue this would help address the disproportionate impact of past cannabis enforcement on marginalized communities.
The governor's proposal faces stiff opposition from Republican lawmakers, who have historically blocked similar efforts. Despite public polling indicating growing support for legalization among Wisconsin voters, GOP leaders remain resistant, citing concerns over public safety and federal legality.
